Shalom everyone! As a "CathJew" I feel it as my part to educate the masses(mostly goy) on Judaism and to make aware of its holidays. Many goy(non Jews) know of Rosh Hashanah(Jewish New Year), and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) but not too many goy know that there is another fall Jewish Holiday by the name of Sukkot.

Sukkot or "Feast of the Tabernacles"is a week long Jewish holiday, this year it started last Saturday the 3rd and ends Friday the 9th. It is somewhat of a "duo holiday" as it has two celebrations mixed in to one.

First and foremost it commerates the harsh 40yr journey through the desert that the Israelites had to endure after escaping Egypt, living in temporary shabby shelters exposed to the elements and other dangers of the night time desert such as predators. This time of vulnerability is remembered by building and camping in tents/booths that are weak, shabby, and exposed to the outside elements. In fact the word Sukko derives from the word "sukkah" which means "booth" in reference of these tents/booths.

The second half of Sukkot is also a Fall Harvest festival, many plants, fruits,& veggies associated with fall such as the various kinds of squash and corn are used to decorate the sukkahs, which may remind many Americans of the celebration of Thanksgiving. And in fact it is believed that the idea/concept of Thanksgiving may have been borrowed from Sukkot.

Sukkot is a big deal amongst the Jewish community though it has not mention on the Gregorian calendar it is a considerably major holiday compared to Hanukkah(which is mentioned on the calendar). And in fact in my downtown area there was a sukkah built near the Crayola Factory and there was a pretty decent crowd of Orthodox Jews celebrating the holiday of Sukkot.

There is so much more info and if you wish to learn more you are welcomed to visit this link. http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday5.htm

And thus ends my Educate the Masses lesson, I hope I've educated well :)

Happy Sukkot!! :)
